Jozefína Marečková alias Puella Classica (1880-1953). A Forgotten Writer
Jozefína Marečková (1880-1953) was a writer, publicist, editor and publisher. Before the WW I she had lived in Vienna and Budapest, where she had published her works in Hungarian and German languages. After the dissolution of the Habsburg Monarchy in 1918 she settled down in Bratislava, where she presented herself as a Slovak patriot and writer. Through these social roles she tried to establish herself in the Slovak environment and integrate herself into cultural community, but her attempts were not successful. Marečková´s position of an outsider in the Slovak cultural community was partly due to her nonactivity in Slovak national and cultural life prior to 1918, and partly because of her negative image of a woman with dubious reputation among the dominant male segment of patriotic circles. Her personality was not fitting into the idealised picture of a Slovak female patriot, defined by qualities such as decency, modesty and piety.
